    Dangerous Liaisons

In the timeless world of Dangerous Liaisons, letters are deployed as weapons in a brutal game of seduction and revenge. Sarah Merteuil, jilted by her lover, enlists the aid of her former lover Stephan Valmont to exact vengeance. The two work out a plot to seduce a nave virgin and bring shame to both her and her future husband, Merteuil's ex. The task proves easy for the experienced Valmont, who has another, more challenging conquest in mind. Valmont makes a bet with Merteuil that he can seduce a devoted, morally upstanding wife and bring proof of the conquest — in writing. The prize will be a night of passion between the two ex-lovers. According to playwright Bradley S. Reichek, "Les liaisons dangereuses was written as a series of 175 letters. Our knowledge of the characters are transmitted through these elegantly crafted missives. In other adaptations the epistolary form of the novel has been compromised. In our version, the letter is left in its rightful place of dominance. The writing desks of Valmont and Merteuil are always present, reinforcing that it is the letter that sets up intrigue, seduces, and, ultimately, kills. The novel also raises important questions about the injustices that women suffer in civil society. We have tried to bring these proto-feminist issues to the foreground of our piece."
