    Barman

    Read the Offoffoff review

Inspired by his twelve years of career bartending, and more pointedly his four year tenure as the weekend barkeep for New Brunswicks The Plum Street Pub, Alex Dawsons mix of memoir and fiction explores with ambient ferocity the codes and rituals of American manhood as he chronicles the rise and fall of a forty-something gin mill bartender-cum-literary darling. "It had been a day like any other. Two fights. One stroke. Rain. The cops had been by earlier with a Xeroxed police sketch of a six foot Mexican who had allegedly raped three college girls over on Cook Campus. They knew we ran a special called Mexican Mondays, featuring $2 tequila shots and half-price Coronas. Had I seen him? I had not. After they left, I wondered out loud about the biological possibility of a six-foot Chicano."
