Depth of SightA triptych consisting of three short plays, DEPTH OF SIGHT examines the complexities of how we perceive the unknown.
DEPTH OF SIGHT starts its engines with the adrenaline charged Turn Four, which portrays Dale Earnhardt's fatal car crash at the Daytona 500 as perceived by the three leading drivers during the final twenty laps. By imagining and revealing their thoughts during the race itself, Skillman places us inside an experience exploding with speed and danger. Directed by Abigail Zealey Bess, Turn Four depicts the racecar driver's denial of the ultimate unknown: death.
Turn Four is followed by Translation of Signs, whose characters struggle to define the unkown. A secretive young woman with a mysterious scar seems to be hiding something; an obsessed admirer has lost himself in watching her and a brooding salesman reluctantly gets drawn into the middle of their haunting, inexplicable relationship. The play explores the unreliability of how we perceive surfaces, symbols, signs and each other. Directed by Jerry Ruiz.
The final third of the triptych, In the Wild, depicts a cast of characters confronting the relentless power of nature. A mesmerizing portrayal of our perceptions of that which we are unable to control: fear, love, isolation, nature, and death. Winner of Perishable Theatre's 2001 Women's Playwriting Festival, In the Wild will be making its NYC debut. Tim Farrell directs.
Crystal Skillman's plays include The Ballad of Phineas P. Gage, written for Drama of Works also produced at HERE, and Flow (both commissioned by the EST/Sloan Project); Tooth produced by EST, et al.
