  •  REVIEW: THEATRESPORTS

    Good "Sports"

"TheatreSports" turns improv comedy into an action-packed showdown of wits.

    By ROBIN EISGRAU

    (Originally reviewed in January 2002.)

The high-energy actors participating in "TheatreSports" bring a competitive element to their particular brand of improv. Split into two teams, the actors challenge each other to successfully perform skits that get rated by a panel of judges. The results are very funny.

On the night we caught the Freestyle Rep crew, the two teams, named Grooveenergy Nyquil Buzz and Sugar Rush, performed a skit where a man invents trends while shoe shopping, a skit where a muumuu is the catalyst for someone jumping out a window, a murder mystery set in a disco, and a domestic drama set in Kandahar, Afghanistan, involving a juicer.

The actors — Jessica Calter, William Cefalo, Mike Durkin, Laura Livingston, Matty Merrill, Laura Valpey and Julianne Ziegler — were vibrant and practically glowing with enjoyment at what they do, which made for a fun experience. Audience members were asked to shout out suggestions of places and things, and there was a prize drawing for tickets to an off-Broadway production at the Intar Theater. Much more interactive and enjoyable than staying home and watching a sitcom, "Theatersports" is quite a treat.
