Curious "Jellow"
"Angry Jellow Bubbles" is a 16-character talkfest about gender issues and self-esteem that won't tell you much you didn't already know.

"Angry Jellow Bubbles" is not so much a play as a two-hour group-therapy session or "Oprah"-thon. Ten women and (a recent addition to the program) six men take turns talking about gender, body image and self-esteem. The script is based on the participants' own experiences.

A typical testimonial goes something like this. "I hated skinny people because I wasn't one of them. And then, when I got skinny, I hated skinny people because I didn't know I was one of them," recalls a hefty actress. "And then when I got fat again, I hated fat people." There's a lot of sympathetic chatter and then the women dance, clean, primp and beautify until it's time for the next actress to speak about her own encounters with gender stereotypes.
The men challenge one another's conceptions of manhood. The guy with the most muscles talks about depilating his legs and plucking his nose hairs like he's challenging someone to take him on over it. "I remember, I used to love Mr. Rogers," says another actor. "Maybe because of all those cardigan sweaters with the little buttons!"
To be fair, the audience ate this show up the night I saw it — but I didn't. "Angry Jellow Bubbles" is theater for the converted. If you already agree with the play's viewpoint and you get a charge out of hearing people say things you already agree with, hey, this is a play for you. But it's not a challenging or eye-opening piece of work.
