Mod about you
You too may fall in love with "mod housewife" Amy Rigby when she straps on her guitar and sings her King-, Kinks- and Cline-style songs.

Although I'm a card-carrying heterosexual and proud of it, there are
times when I look at another woman and think, "Damn!" That's how I feel
when I see Amy Rigby
perform.

It's not that I want to make love to her. If you put a naked me on a
desert island with only a naked Miss Universe for company, I'd run and hide behind the nearest palm tree. A gurl! Yuck! But that doesn't mean I
wouldn't sneak a glance at the curve of her . . . cheekbones. It's not a
question of wanting another woman, but of wanting to be one. And if
I ever wanted to be another woman, I couldn't choose anyone cooler
visually or vocally than Amy Rigby when she's onstage.
OK, maybe she evokes just a tiny stirring. But you really can't
blame me. She is, after all, a special case. On the one hand, Rigby the
performer is a petite powerhouse, a pillar of femininity (her 1996 debut behind the nearest palm tree. A gurl! Yuck! But that doesn't mean I

aren't quite as memorable, but Rigby's songs always sound better live.
That, and the fact that she's playing on a bill with Nashville roots-rocker
Jim Lauderdale and the one and only Marshall Crenshaw are reason enough to
see her this Thursday at the Bowery Ballroom. And how can you not love a
woman who writes on her Web site that she is currently listening to Mott
The Hoople and P.F. Sloan?
