Choice voice
Rachelle Ferrell, who lends her spectacular six-octave range to a blend of R&B and jazz, plays a week at the Blue Note — and a night on the Internet.

When Rachelle Ferrell burst onto the music scene in the early nineties
she provided the music scene not only with one of its most powerful and
unique voices, but also a much needed musical bridge between R&B and
jazz. Equally at home in a straight off R&B soul format as singing
straight-ahead jazz and standards, Rachelle Ferrell is a musical anomaly
— not so much because she can do both — but because she does both so
damn well.

It is Rachelle's musicianship, songwriting, musical intuition and
stunning six-octave vocal range that set her apart from her
contemporaries. While still a virtual unknown Rachelle had already
shared the stage with such legends as Stanley Clarke, Wayne Shorter,
Lenny White (who produced her first album), Quincy Jones, Will Downing
and George Duke (who produced her second album and often plays in her
band!).
Although she has not released any new material since her 1992 R &
B/smooth jazz self-titled major label debut (Rachelle's first effort as
a leader, 1990's "First Instrument" was re-issued by Blue Note Records
in 1995), Rachelle has continued to consistently woo audiences on the
club circuit and at jazz festivals where she often be seen sharing the
stage with George Duke. In mid-December however, the stage will be all
hers as Rachelle brings her R&B band, sophisticated melodies, smooth
grooves — and of course — THAT VOICE to the Blue Note for a week of what
is bound to be pure vocal magic.
