REVIEW: FREAKS, GLAM GODS AND ROCK STARS

Freaks, Glam Gods and Rock Stars

    Glam I am

"Freaks, Glam Gods and Rock Stars" is an affectionate look at the flamboyant subculture of drag queens and glam rockers that grew up in New York beginning in the 1970s.

The documentary "Freaks Glam Gods and Rock Stars" turns the spotlight on a gaggle of drag queens and a fistful of rock bands that are based in New York, giving a number of performers who've graced the stage at Wigstock and/or Don Hill's and/or the Continental perhaps a little less than their 15 minutes of fame but immortalizing them nonetheless.

FREAKS, GLAM GODS AND ROCK STARS
Full title: Freaks, Glam Gods and Rock Stars: The NYC Story.
    Directed by: John T. Ryan.
Combining interviews with performance footage, John T. Ryan presents an affectionate cornucopia of the underground scene. By watching this film you'll find out where performers such as Kevin Aviance, Dean Johnson, Jimmy James and Flotilla DeBarge are from, you'll hear Jesse Malin explain exactly why Coney Island High had to close up, and you'll witness Kembra Pfaler from the Voluptuous Horror of Karen Black (in outlandish makeup) talk about the need for rent control.

Performers also get asked if they support themselves by their art — some like dragster Miss Understood do (she's done drag performances for Citibank parties), others like female female impersonator Bob (a very voluptuous woman) do things like sell their dirty underwear. On the opposite end of the spectrum, the guitar player from the Brickbats is a kindergarten teacher in Garden City.

Freaks, Glam Gods and Rock Stars
There's a lot of performance footage by the likes of Aviance (vogueing onstage at CBGBs), Lady Bunny (doing a very off-color interpretation of "La Vida Loca"), Miss Guy and the Toilet Boys, Nancy Boy and Starr.

If you went to Wigstock last Labor Day or Caught the Toilet Boys at Squeezebox once and found yourself wanting to know more, you'll definitely enjoy this film.
