Parent has written a good balanced discussion of the movie as a movie. I thought the characters were pretty much idiots but I was entertained by the film. I had to stop halfway and look at the box where it plainly mentioned there were actor and director commentaries before deciding it was a mockumentary. I suspect that some of the firefight footage was real and some was staged. But even in those that were plainly staged, it looked as if they were using live rounds. There were certainly tracers flying in the scene where they found themselves trapped in the building.
Finally, to those who complain that the film presents a negative depiction of Afghanistan and Afghanis, I have to ask whether you have personally been to Afghanistan and can therefore dispute those depictions based on personal experience? I assume probably not. Afghanistan is a third world country that has been ravaged by war for a generation. I've never been there, but I have been in similar locations. Places like that tend to be hellholes. And there shouldn't be anything wrong with bringing that fact to the first world's attention.

Re: september tapes
I saw the movie this weekend & I thought it was great for a "movie". I've also read all the comments at this forum and there seems to a lot of confusion. With questions ranging from the validity or authenticity of the movie to the actions & situations of the characters. Let me tell you what I think of this movie (IMHO)
First off, The movie itself is well done. It has characters that are built upon as the movie progresses. That way, you either like them or hate them, and isn't that the main job of all characters in any movie? Some of you seem sympathetic to Lars. Others were in disbelieve of the stupidity of his actions. Yet, others hated his guts. I think that's great. You were affected in some way by the character & his actions.
Second, there's the story line. Which seems very choppy at first, but then makes sense at the end. Knowing what drives Lars in the beginning of the movie would not have as good an effect as keeping the audince in the dark until the end. Classic movie making. Why did Lars act the way he did? Part of his character's job was to stir the emotions of the viewer. Wether those emotions were disbelieve, anger or simpathetic. If you felt any of them then the director did his job. As for the inconsistencies in the film. We can all watch any blockbuster and pick it apart. I don't believe there has ever been a film made without some critic saying they could have done it differently.
To sum it up:
Was it fake?- you bet.
Were they in Afganistan? - again, you bet.
Were the characters real? - nope.
What about the story line? - fiction.
Were the fire fights real? - Well, you can make anything you want these days with a good studio in Hollywood, but I'll leave that one up to the director's. I'll say this much about the fire fights- they seem real & that's why it was so entertaining. On the other hand, they also seem a little over the top.
In the end, it comes down to this. Great movie. Could have been better. As for the haters that don't have "constructive" criticism, it seems that they are just jabbibg at Americans every opportunity they get. Saying this movie sucks and generalizing Americans only shows your ignorance.
