There was nobody on the phone. Gordon was imagining that he was talking to his wife Wendy, when in actuality he was talking to nobody.

Ok...I thought this movie was really good, but one thing I don't understand is if Gordon's wife is dead, who is he talking to when he calls her? We know the phone works because others use it to make calls. So whats going on with that?
