Subject: propaganda for a new millenium
Date: Sep 25, 2005
It's surprising to me that not many people agree with this article. It should be very obvious to those who have studied ancient Chinese history that the Qin shi huang di depicted in "Hero" is completely false. The Qin emperor was a tyrant if there ever was one, killing hordes of people simply for his own benefit. The message of "Hero" is clearly propagandistic, and meant as an apology for tyrannical maniacs like the Qin emperor. I think that part of the reason many people here in the west do not see this blatant propaganda is that many of us lack knowledge about Chinese history. As said in the article, however, the Chinese viewers of this film know well the story of Qin, and for them it will have the message that "tyrannical rulers" aren't always what they seem--the state knows best. The claim of "Hero" is that people have to sacrifice in order to serve the "greater good of humanity." But no one in the film seems to realize this: who exactly is "humanity," if not the people being massacred and pushed aside to supposedly "serve" it.
