Yea, in saying that i don't think that once in the appartments in the real outside world there animals ( dogs ) became as important to them !In my view the excitement of moving on in their lives seemed much more over-powering then the need for feeline company... so the dogs were probably just killed, thousands of perfectly healthy cats and dogs are simply 'put down' every day in London alone because homes cannot be found for them.

Actually, the fate of the animals in this film is somewhat important, and I'm surprised they did not discuss it in the movie itself. Some library research revealed to me that PETA got involved in the lawsuit against amtrak, in defense of the pets kept by the homeless. (Since the homeless were not allowed to keep pets in their new apartments, something had to be done with them. Amtrak wanted to send them to pounds, but PETA insisted on sending them to a shelter.) They ended up at the Northshore shelter...and funding from PETA provided much of the assistance for lawyers fees in the trial against amtrak. So in a sense, the pets helped save their owners!
