    Reader comments on Enduring Love

Subject: Why change the story so dramatically?
    Date: Aug 1, 2005

I read Ian Mc Ewans brilliant novel and was appalled by the movie. Why change a good story and make it just another stalker film? The book was contrasting a n acclaimed science journalist, devout atheist, with a guy who was a devout and crazy fundamentalist Christian and primarily wanted to save the atheist and get him to understand the love of God. Too daring for the producers so they had to revert to a rerun of Fatal Attractions?

I don't understand why they had to change everybody's jobs, I don't understand why they had to invent all sorts of people while leaving out the ones that counted in the book, I don't understand why the freak isn't a wealthy unemployed living in an inherited mansion but instead is put into some dilapidated housing estate (how predictable!), I don't understand why there were knife attacks - the book is much more subtle than that.

I don't understand why anybody feels the need to make a dispensable film using a brilliantly crafted and very intelligent book as some kind of cover. And why critics never care to read a book in the first place. Interesting cinematography can't win me over either. A superficial film, compared to the depth of the book. Huge disappointment. Read the book instead!
