Mom's POV
I knew this was going to be a hard movie to watch. And it was. I had my one and only baby in August 1992. This year, she'll turn 12. She is the most precious thing about my life and always has been. I became rich the day she was born.
Like the mom in the flick, I am a single working mom but unlike the mom in the flick, I'm on to the stuff going on with kids today. And not just from watching this film. The daughter of a friend of mine did a similar slide a few years back. I actually had to clue the mom in because she was not only clueless, the mom was in frank denial. It just about ruined my friendship with her because she didn't want to believe her kid was doing all those things. But what mom would?
My advice to other working parents is to make sure your daughter is involved in an activity that takes up A LOT of her time and energy and also gives her A LOT of esteem (ie something she can excel at). Divorced or not, make sure that her dad is INVOLVED in her life. The only thing I insisted on when I got divorced was that her dad develop and maintain a relationship with his daughter. Girls need the support of their dads as well as their moms. It costs me a lot of $$$$$$$$ but my daughter is enrolled in the finest ballet school in the city. This ballet school (PNB) has a high standard expected of the students. She goes there afterschool. PNB's standard and my standard are quite similar and I am indebted to them for helping my child navigate the middle school years.
Tell your daughter that she is a leader and she will lead. Since she was little, I've been telling my child this and she believes that she is a leader and isn't afraid to not follow the crowd.
My mom didn't tell me anything about boys when I was a teen because NO ONE back then would ever have thought of doing some of that stuff, at least not prior to high school. Thongs were sandals you wore on your feet and G strings were something ONLY strippers wore. It was a very different world. There were drugs around, it was the hippie years and some kids ran away, but for the most part, that behavior was not "normal". Unfortunately, wild behavior has become more normalized today. By this I don't mean every kid is doing all these things. They aren't. But push-up bras and thongs on little girls are normalizing the expectation of sexual behavior from these very young girls. (Is your daughter wearing thongs? Why? Is she wearing push-up bras? Why? Is she wearing her jeans low so her thong or G string shows when she sits down? Why? Is she encouraged to date before the age of 16? Why? Have you told her about kids like Evie and that they are to be avoided? Why the hell not?)
I am very glad this movie was made. I do intend to watch it with my child in another year or so. She is very sensitive to violence and scary stuff so right now wouldn't be the time. But I think it is good that she be aware of some of the things that are going on around her. As a cautionary tale.
I think middle schoolers and teen girls today have a very difficult path to navigate. It really is up to the parents to make sure their kids are not susceptible to the kind of peer manipulation that this film shows so well. And a lot of parents are not up to the task for a variety of reasons. Girls, for your own sake, focus on getting a college education. That college degree is as good as gold. Especially if you're from a poor family. Keep at your studies. You can do it, you just got to believe in yourself and keep focused. And not to be preachy but why have sex in middle school/high school? None of those guys are on the same page about relationships. Forget that stuff until college. It just isn't worth it for girls to have sex that young - AT ALL. Keep your nose in the books: most college educated guys will only get serious with college educated women anyway. Don't shortchange yourself. Get that college degree.
