Right On Peach!!!
I recall the departure from silencio too as an effort to escape a hidden message of truth.
The Key came into being and like a pacifier they regained their emotional control and left for the apartment.
The Rita characters death is never shown to have occurred. The blue key was only an indication of it having happened. I doubt it was as stylish as a limo drive gone wrong judging by the greasy hit mans attire.
I'd only linked the Cowboy to a level headed thinking that "Betty/Diane" had left behind in Canada. (Loads of rancher cowboys in Canada.)
The animals skull is a common sight on a coral so I ignored it's possibilities as a symbol.
Your "fucking kraut" perspective caught it well I believe.
It also puts me back on my first take that the suicide did occur and not that it was just a part of the imagined realities of grief/regret.
I'm a "fucking commercial fisherman" so I have to much time to think while traveling at 10 knots or less for over 6 days at times so I have time to consider this films possibilities.
I'm home for about one more week. May rent this one latter this year to view with some shipmates.
Steven
P.S. I don't buy the simple view of another Hollywood victum. It's just scape goat thinking. People can suffer from cultural adjustments where ever they move to. Try moving to... Ketchikan Alaska?

death!!!
please excuse my poor english, i'm a fucking kraut :-)
what do you guys think, isn't the cowboy death ??? notice the emotionless way he behaves. when he first appears to the director, a light goes on over the skeleton of a dead animal. he says: "if you do good, you'll see me one more time (the time of your death), if you do bad....
so, the cowboy is death, and he has an agenda.
he wants to save the blonde girl from limbo, the netherworld she lives in after she killed herself. when he says to the corpse! "hey, pretty girl, time to wake up, he means: "goddammit, poor soul, finally accept your death and leave limbo". she has been dead since the beginning of the movie. the whole movie is her life passing her by with a subjective/exaggerating colouring from her side, to somehow cloud her feelings of guilt. first she was this pure, innocent, naive young aspiring actress.
but she was corrupted by hollywood. her audition is a very crucial scene. because there she's selling her soul to hollywood, the second she allows the old actor to touch her ass. then she degenerates to the woman living alone in her single appartment. the silencio club scene always sends chills down my spine. it terrified me, made me feel that something's wrong, but i couldn`t see what it was. the guy doing all that tape talking is acting like the devil. i`ve never seen a better mephisto. he's must somehow be trying to get the souls of the blonde chick (this is all still very theoretical, but anyway, something is brooding beneath the surface in that scene) one of the chicks is shaking like hell when the actor raises his hands, commands a little thunder and looks diabolically.
why are the chick(s) crying? i think its because of the numb realization that their existence is also not a real one, that they're dead and what they perceive as reality is only a distant reflection. a tape and an illusion. a dream. when the singer dies that is made perfectly clear. the chicks cry and flee the club, trying to avoid truth.
