Figure it out? Don't bother. Avant garde or whatever loaded lingos its admirers choose to describe it does not detract from the fact that ultimately what's onscreen is a waste of money.

Previous: "YOU figure it out, I sure as hell couldn't!" | Next: What the f%@# ??

    Response to this comment:
"YOU figure it out, I sure as hell couldn't!"

This film promises so much and delivers so little. Although the actual medium looks somewhat better than over-exposed 8 mm home-movie, the long slow pans, which lead us to expect such amazing revelations almost always disappoint; and the camera looks to be hand-held much of the time which made me feel queasy. The story, such as it is, can be told with reasonable completeness within five minutes but we keep saying, up until the final moment: "There MUST be more than this!" But there isn't. You get the feeling that Carlos Reygadas got lost pretty early on and decided that he'd better turn this into an "art movie". Responsibility for making any sense of the thing is thus passed on to you and me; as he shrugs: "YOU figure it out, I sure as hell couldn't!"

Pity the poor actors - they did as well as they could hope under the circumstances; I doubt that either enjoyed their roles much.

I think this "genre" is passing, thankfully, and ten years from now nobody will be able to get away with making such a film.
