The second statue is Kwan Yin, the female, yielding Goddess of Compassion. He is simply carrying the suffering of his heart with him up the mountain as well as the suffering of all those he has encountered. He learns compassion on this day. By the way, the woman whose face is covered submits prayers in exactly an identical manner as his lover's mother. He does notice this in the film if you watch closely.
