Oh man, going down the list of reviews and no one has gotten it right until i found this one.
that fool in the first review speaking of the tapes being distractions made me want to puke.
for a second, i thought i was analyzing the movie a lot more than it needed, but the relationship between the tapes of mary #444 we're in direct correlation to Gordon's decent into madness as 'good scare' mentioned earlier. I also believe that there is meaning to him rubbing the picture of a woman and child. Were they meant to be his? they were in mary's room. he may have been posessed by her? maybe?
dunno, the movie kicked ass though!!
if you can keep your eyes open you pansies!!!

Most missed the point
I am disappointed in the the reviewer's article, because obviously he did not watch the same movie I watched.
All the so called "distractions" needed to be there, or the movie would have been nothing more then the regular horror flick. For example, through Mary's tapes, you learn that Gordon and Mary were introduced to the voices in the same manner, and Gordon did not start to hear the voices until he was next to Mary's room. The whole plot is tied to Simon, who is heard in Gordon's head and in Mary's tapes. The movie's makers did a great job revealing the needed hints to tie the movie together.
Watch this movie. It is an excellent "thinking" horror movie. You will be left with a cold chill once the moive is over. I watched it in the heart of night with the lights off. See it.
