    Reader comments on Downfall

    Subject: wake-up call
    Date: May 1, 2005

As fate would have it I saw "Downfall" yesterday, on April 30, the 60th anniversary of Adolf Hitler's death in the bunker. An appropriate celebration. This is a gripping film, first of all because of its historical content. It looks very real: the acting is convincing, the locations (not Berlin, but Leningrad) breathtaking, the special effects natural. The unfolding of the events is very well paced. You feel you are there, at the centre of control where everything goes out of control. In the eyes of the actress playing the part of Traudl Junge, throughout the whole film, we see disbelief, horror, confusion and her desperate attempt at holding on to the last shreds of common sense. She is the witness after all who will survive to tell the tale. For me personally, being born in Germany in 1949, just like the earlier documentary "Hitler's Secretary", this film is a window into a past that I barely missed in my own life time. But it also describes accurately and shockingly the fall-out of indoctrination and mind-control wherever in the world those are imposed on human beings: denial, delusion and the descent into sheer madness. In that sense its value is timeless. The real Traudl Junge says in the end: "Maybe I could have known...", indicating the regret and shame she (and most Germans) had to live with. I take this as another wake-up call, a warning to us, the next generation, since now it is our turn to be fully aware of what is happening in our life times, so that at some point in an irreversible future we won't have to say the same thing.
