It has been quite a battle for me to see this movie. I finally got to see it last night and had to drive an hour and a half to see it. My first attempt was a failure, as i arrived at the cinema after a long wait, the session was cancelled. but on my second go I made it, and it was well worth the hours in driving.
I have yet to see this film many times again, but what i got out of it the first time just blew me away. I watched it in the same frame of mind as I did "Eraserhead", on a spiritual level consisting of the stages of life, dreams, death and being lost in the doorway between the third and fourth dimension.
My interpretation of the film so far is as follows. (as short and sweet as possible)
Diane Selwyn is an aspiring actress who wishes to make it big in Hollywood. In her attempts to make it she tries to sleep her way to the top with movie-star Camilla Rhodes. She ends up falling for Camilla, but Camilla later announces she is going to marry director Adam Kesher. Diane does not like this news and hires a hitman to take out Camilla. and he does, it may not have turned out to plan but she does actually die in the car crash. Camilla, who is now Rita walks away from the crash all lost and disorientated, is actually dead and in limbo between crossing over (a lost soul). Back to Diane, guilt catches up with her over the death of Camilla, and she commits suicide. now she is caught between life and death when she arrived at the airport as Betty Elms. I beleive the old man and old lady were some sort of guides. Now Camilla/Rita and Diane/Betty are both caught in a world between our reality and the netherworld and are playing out roles that are not really who they are, but what they are supposed to be to learn their lesson to completly cross over and make them true to themselves. They begin to find out clues and Diane/Betty tells Camilla/Rita she loves her, I may be reading too far into it, but i think Camilla/Rita never told her she loved her back, this may have some significance to the fact that she was a bit obssessed with her. After they make love and she tells her she loves her, at 2 in the morning Diane/Betty is woken buy Camilla/Rita mumbling in her sleep, and they take off to "silencio". This is where things change, I believe that this theatre is where they may have originally met, and the song being sung may be "their song". The box is discovered and when it is opened by Camilla/Rita Diane/Betty is gone, this happens for a reason as she is not supposed to see it. This is why I believe that the story is told from Camilla's point of view. She opens the box and it unfolds to her what Diane is all about. We see how much Diane fantasised about Camilla, and what she was really like in the conscious world and how she planned to knock her off. Not Betty, but Diane a middle class person who wanted to make it big.
I agree with the notion of the bum, being a burt version of Camilla.
The film on a whole may seem very surreal to most, and I believe when we are dreaming we are travelling between the third and fourth dimension. This may explain the whole dream like atmosphere and little parodies. I think Lynch has captured this extremely well.
There is so much more I can analyse about this film, but it would end up being the length of a book. I just wish to get my view across and hope it can open up the minds of people who read this.
