My immediate reaction to this film was not "Wow, that was really, really good," but rather:
"Wow...I have no idea what just happened."
I found myself thinking constantly about Mulholland Drive. This only happens when you see a truly great film. And so I watched it again. And again. Later, I would tell my friends about this awesome movie that they MUST see, and they would ask "what's it about?" to which I happily respond: "I have no idea!" For truly, the film is an enigma; it was my own blue box.
And here is where I found the key. The best deconstruction I have ever read, it will make you question (or confirm) your own interpretations. After reading this essay in its entirety, I watched the film again. The blue box is now open:
