I just rented this film on DVD by Michael Winterbottom and all I can say is IT IS BLOODY BRILLIANT!! The vision underlying this film is so on-target it's almost as if Winterbottom has been able to see into the future. . the near-future. And anyone who isn't slightly frightened by this vision is truly living in some state of denial. Or is just ignorant. The few negative comments I've heard generally revolve around the fact that many of the human involvements and actions are all "tied up" at the end. Too many loose ends for the mediocre Fox-News minds I guess. . Câmon people *real life* NEVER ties up all the loose ends! And I think Winterbottom is to me congratulated for not capitulating to that film ending clich.
At a few spots you may find yourself wondering why certain relationships weren't further explored but after watching the "making of Code 46" featurette we learn that the movie was made on a shoestring budget. Which would explain why there are some truncated parts but all in all - once again we see Tom Robbins demonstrating why he is one of the most respected actors around today - he only commits to film projects that have something huge to say. . .and Samantha Morton demonstrates the incredible sensuality only hinted at by her performance in the big budget "The Minority Report".
Thank god for films like this and for filmmakers like Michael Winterbottom - they show us that at least their are artists in the world who see where were headed as a race. . .I find myself wishing the heads of states of the world could somehow be compelled to be made to watch films like "Code 46". But then some panel of educational experts would need a month to explain it all to George Bush.
See this film!
