Subject: The Two Boxes

The box and key of the dream are obviously projections of the dreaming Diane, but of the ãrealä blue-key and blue-box that ãexistä in real life. Of course there is a real ãblue-keyä but not a real ãblue-box.ä But when Diane hired the hit man, she naively asks him what the blue key opens, and he laughs. It doesnât open anything; it is just the way that he will pass on the message to her that ãIt has been done.ä But, of course, in Dianeâs mind the key takes on a huge significance, and she invents ãsomethingä that it goes with. That something is blue also, and has a lock.
Now the blue-box of the dream clearly contains a secret. But there is ãleakage.ä The triangle shaped key for instance. As I pointed out in my earlier post, the triangle has often been a symbol for homosexuality, or in this case, a lesbian relationship. Remember they find the key somewhat early on before they make love, and ãBettyä falls in love with ãRita.ä So it is a ãhintä that has appeared in the dream. Later at the theater the woman who utters ãsilencioä has bright blue hair. She, in a sense, is part of the ãlocked up secret.ä What better way to keep a secret than to ãremain silent.ä But I donât think that the secret of the dream-box is the same as the secret of the ãreal-life box.ä
The environment where the ãdream-boxä is found is the theater. Consider those found in the theater. They arenât exactly young and beautiful. There is something ãnot prettyä about the secret of the ãdreamä blue-box. The setting of where the dream blue-box is discovered is of course the theater, so that the surroundings convey something about the nature of its secret. Itâs secret (in the dream) may be something like the lesbian relationship and the rejection of one of the lovers. The singerâs words, if in English, would be devastating because they, in a sense, tell of what is going on in Dianeâs mind. ãI was alright for a while·I could smile for a while.. (The ended love affair.) But, it has been switched to Spanish to obscure (somewhat) the meaning.
Diane trembles when the man takes on a Devilish appearance and there is thunder & lightening ö going somewhat beyond the recorded sounds of a band. She could be trembling for several reasons. Firstly, as the dreamer she has the most to fear, the others are just made up characters. Secondly, if she starts to ãget itä that this is all a recording, she may be getting closer to ãwaking up.ä It is a recording, because in some sense the dream is a ãplaybackä of events. Finally, ãBettyä may be starting to get a notion of the existence of the ãotherä blue-box (secret), which is too horrible to contemplate.
When they get back, and the box is opened, the ãsecretä is discovered. The Aunt comes into the room, and there is no one there! They were just the fictitious characters of Dianeâs dream! Now the sleeping Diane starts to wake up!
The other blue-box is the one associated with the monster/troll out behind the dumpster. Just as the theater had individuals with lined faces, the monster here has a face much too ugly to contemplate. Indeed, in Dianeâs dream that face has already killed!
Why does the elderly couple emerge from the paper bag that the monster has placed on the ground? Itâs because, in their miniaturized forms they have ãemergedä from the blue-box. Just as part of the secret in the dream ãleaked outä in the form of the triangular shaped key ö these two little people are something from Dianeâs Deep River Ontario past. They are part of her superego, or conscience. Those in our family, whom we get our morals from become internalized into our sense of self, and become part of our conscience.
After Diane has returned the borrowed material to her neighbor, and the neighbor has left, there is another knocking at the door. That knocking can only be the police. Her neighbor has informed her that they were looking for her. As the knocking takes place her ãconscienceä slips under the door to come at her. She certainly cannot answer the door, as the first thing the police are liable to tell her is that Camilla is dead! The blue-key is sitting on the coffee table, but she canât acknowledge what it really signifies because it is too horrible. Remember Diane at this stage would rather slip into a daydream about her lover Camilla, than remain in reality.
Those two little daemons of conscience then pursue her down the hallway, growing as they do so, and she runs from them, horrified of finding out the truth. In the room she clearly knows exactly where the gun is and quickly, before the second secret can be revealed to her, ends it all. The final images of the film show us that in the sleep of death Diane is finally where she wants to be.
Perhaps the final shot of the blue-haired lady uttering silencio is really advice meant for the viewing audience. What little blue boxes are there in our lives that we really would rather not know about! Brilliant David L
