    Subject: Re: The Ending

He had to die because it was the dramatic cliche that the writer resorted to; no other reason. He could have done anything, but no, as he fleetingly transcends his cultural straight-jacket in the Australian outback, he transcends mortal cares altogether. ('Better one glimpse within the tavern caught, than in the temple lost outright...' Omar Khyyam) Yes, Toni Collette's performance is credible, but their desert-romance isn't. Nor is her character Sandy's wild driving in the desert sand; slow and steady is the bushy's rule, not pell-mell like a bull at a gate. That they would become bogged was evident to anyone with eyes to see. This is an interesting yet flawed film.

I think he wrote it too. I also think that the wife figured it out. I loved Tsunashima's performance. (I myself am a white woman married to an Asian man, and that story hit so close to home. Especially the part were they were sitting on the boat and that old man was being rude...my husband is from Thailand and alot of people discriminate.)

Oh and by they way, WHY DID HE HAVE TO DIE!!!? *tears*
