2 possiblilities, perhaps both work: Woman does not want her identity known because she is abandoning her child. And/or story is an allegory and it doesn't matter who the woman is. It is all women, no woman, it is the woman he knew but since she is dead we cannot see her face. The child is his child, the child is him, the child is any child, all children. Individuality is a myth. We are all the same and the same as the creatures, consciousness in physical form.
