Not sure if anyone mentioned this, so i thought I'd add my views in regards to children...

There is a clear link made between angels and children ("It is not dangerous to confuse angels with children", says Donnie in his drunken stupor). During the gameshow, directly behind Stanley is the medical sign of a winged snake twisting around a pole. In numerous closeups of him answering questions the wings of the snake hover above his shoulders, like angel wings.

The child-rapper is also an important figure in the movie. When he raps for Curran, the first 3/4s of it appears to just be vulgarity, but his final lines strike a prophetic cord: debt piling up and God raining down upon you. Later, he takes Curran's gun (which falls from the sky near the end of the movie). The significance of this? When he admits to Claudia that he's the laughingstock of the force and that he lost his gun, she seems struck by his honesty. Perhaps that's part of God's plan for him, especially given Curran's monologues about God planning his meeting with Claudia.

The movie, as I see it, is about judgment. Each of the characters must confront something from their past. There is also an element of divine intervention, obviously the frogs, as if to say that things we would typically pass off as coincidence are sometimes just too significant to be considered such. The three seemingly random scenes at the start of the movie really drive it home, with the narrator concluding that they cannot just be chance.

The Exodus stuff seems to be covered in this forum, so I won't touch on that. I think that it's important to look at how the frogs actually affect people - messing up Donnie's face, which leads him to conclude that he doesn't need braces to love - the frog falling on Jimmy Gator's gun - the meeting of Gator's wife and Claudia - and so forth.

Enough rambling for me, though ;) wonderful movie. Great insights, everyone!

The biblical references are indeed there in spades, and your theory about the movie being an allegorical representation of Exodus is as plausible as any. However, this was not a good movie. It's an over-ambitious, sprawling mess. Writer/director/producer Paul Anderson had what ultimatly amounts to a very simple idea about childhood, adulthood, the conflict between them and the redemtion that ideally should save them. Throw in a little "help" from God almighty, a bunch of bizarre incidents and coincidences, a over-stylized form, and every single idea even marginally related that went through his head and you have the rambling, undisciplined mess disguised as something deep and profound that was this movie.
