Reader comments on The Cremaster Cycle

Subject: Re: wtf - 'Cremaster Cycle'

It's easy to become confused by such a work as the Cremaster Cycle. Work produced by leading edge artists are rarely understood by the general public of their time. To help you out with the little info I have, the 'Cremaster' is a muscle that moves the male testicles through their cycle, if you have balls you would have wondered at this at some stage.
This up and down movement is a theme that exists throughout the piece. He has cleverly combined film, sculpture, performance, music, satire and symbolism into a version of how he perceives the world. This makes his work quite traditional, in that he is portraying how he sees the world as an artist. It is his use of media that is new and could be confusing. You could imagine all of these things smashed together in one painting, surreal? Anyway, Barney used to play semi professional football. His football years have carried over into his art. His experience of the football stadium is central to this and this plan view of the football field is a symbol used throughout the Cremaster Cycle. The experience that he described was that he not only experienced the field and the stadium from an on the field level, but also from an above the field point of view. I.E. the things that we build around us are extensions of our bodies a prothesis. There is heaps more in this - there is also references to his cultural heritage that are weaved in there. I hope this offers some insight to whoever reads this. A cut down DVD version is available out there. Cheers Simon

    wtf

yeah matthew barney was one artist that makes my mind fall under utter confusion. being an artist i gave it a shot and looked at it and tried to understand but all i got was wow. this is megga sick. looking at his work just remindes me of hardcore frak pron god its better to list it as pron than preformance art. though i do give him repect for doing his own work.
