I rented "Session 9" from the word-of-mouth recommendation of a friend out in L.A. who has some ties to the Hollywood industry. I figured, "Eh...he must know his stuff. I'll pick it up and give it a look."
I wasn't disappointed.
To quote Joshua Tanzer from the main critique of the film:
'The character development and the mysterious discoveries are nothing but diversions ÷ if they have anything at all to do with the horror-show finale, I have no idea what it is.'
Mr. Tanzer is not the only one to claim that the session tapes found by the character Mike (the team's bright boy) don't seem to fit into the plotline. But the truth is quite the contrary.
If you watch carefully, you'll notice that the material found on the session tapes carefully mirrors the descent into madness experienced by the movie's killer. You'll also note that, as the week wears on, each man becomes affected by the institution in his own way.
And when was the last time you saw a creepy flick that took place almost entirely in broad daylight?
At any rate, I thought the movie to be well-handled and acted. Additionally, I felt David Caruso's performance was one of the best I've seen from him.
If you wander by the 'New Release' shelf at your local video store and see "Session 9", pick it up and give it a fair chance. It's a breath of fresh air, to be sure.
