The true and very simple 'meaning' of Mullholland Dr., is quite easy to explain.
First of all, the movie is about a dream. We are in a dream the ENTIRE time EXCEPT ONE scene which is critical and pivotal. Watch it again with this thought in mind and you'll see...it ALL falls into place BEAUTIFULLY. To explain: Not *just* a dream .... Its a dream about someone (Diane) who is having a dream about another person(Camille)....but the catch is, it ALL boils down to ONE person - the lady with blue hair at the end of the movie. Rita ALSO happens to be dreaming in Diane's dream....BUT.. the catch..... she is ALSO dreaming in real-time in real life at the exact same time the Diane is dreaming, so Lynch moves back and forth between Rita's *dream* and Diane's reality -which is about ONE PERSON - Camille (who happens to be the blue hair lady at the end of the film). Bear in mind, in Camille's dream, the Director, Adam, with whom she is having an affair, is temporarily daydreaming that he is smashing the car of mobsters who are bullying him to cast ANOTHER actress than the one he wants. But it is also REALLY happening. So..Camille is dreaming about the Adam(director) who in REAL LIFE is being bullied by the mob, but who ALSO happens to be dreaming about Camille's dream! Follow me... Diane, whose dream we are currently in then wakes up.....IN HER DREAM (NOT in reality - she "wakes up" IN HER DREAM). As she "wakes up" she meets "Rita" in the shower....who actually is SIMULTANEOUSLY (in real life) meeting Adam. You see? Remember the scene in the resturant where the guy is explaining to the cop about 'something real bad ' that was going to happen? And the scene where the guy shoots his friend, the maintenance guy, and the fat lady, and steals the book? THAT is the book that Adam has written (in Camille's dream) about Diane's 'aunt's' bigalow...(the aunt who just HAPPENS to be ....low and behold .... ADAM'S MOTHER! ....you see? Its very very cool.
She is the one (in Camille's dream) who actually dictates the "universe" of events in a simple blue box ....she holds "the key".....and arranges the meetings with Satan( who appears as a cowboy) and Adam. "You do good, you'll see me ONCE again (at the party), you do bad, you'll see me twice again" In other words... DIANE has now sold her soul to the devil to get this part, and has *become* Camille (in her dream of course) and the devil is telling Adam - ' hire her, and you'll see me 'presiding over things' at the party as usual - if you don't you'll see me when I kill you, and you'll see me in hell" Of course this is all just a dream that Adam is having about the Lady with blue hair at the end of the movie (who is actually - as I'm sure you already guessed - the AUNT in Rita's dream!)- hence the phrase she uses at the end. The ONLY reality scenes in the movie are in the club when the lady is singing beautifully. Rita actually fell to sleep in the theater and THAT is where her dream actually begins...about Adams dream, and Camille's dream, and the burned up woman, and the blue-hair lady, and the lesbian sex, and her aunt, and the guy who shot people for the book, and the girl who wants her stuff back from her apartment, and the devil cowboy, and the mobster. Remember the scene where the mobster spits out his coffee? THAT is the exact reason why the lady in blue hair (in the theater) said what she did -- because of Diane's dream! See? For example...when Diane was showing Rita the dead girl lying on the bed, THAT is when the limo driver's actually pulled over and were about to shoot Rita - ( in Adam' dream)...but the kids who wrecked (in reality) then sort of 'saved the day' because Diane then got the part in the movie at the end, and didn't have to follow the white rabbit after all! I'm so glad you took the time to read, and ponder this very simple explaination because it is a true productive use of your time, and I would never sucker you in like Lynch does, but wow, if I could have $7 for everyone that just read this pile of sh*t, I'd be laughing to the bank too.
