Reader comments on Maria Full of Grace

    Subject: Maria Full of Grace

"Maria" hss gotten overall tremendously pos reviews, but I have come across a few using the famous "O" word( overrated ) and general negative comments about it. I for one with have to go with the former, this was one of the best independant movies of 2004, of the last couple of years for that matter. I missed it in theaters when it hit NYC last year, playing downtown as well in "los barrios" namely the RKO in my neighborhood of Washington Heights! I was happy to see this as I figured alot of the "white art crowd" would enjoy this and not Latinos and Columbians. Hopefully a lot of "la gente" got a chance to see this.
I guess I'll have to say what most people said about it, it's a very serious tomed film about "mules" from Columbia, mainly young and desperate women, that looks and feels more like a documnetary than anything. Maria( Catalina Sandino Moreno ) IS Maria and what a fabulous choice by the director to cast her. Josh Marston the director apparently just saw her on the Bogota streets and snatched her up. She is a beautiful young actress who just goes with it like nothing. This is her first, and hopefully not her last, role and I give her a massive big up!! All the actors and actresses did a great job in my book, but the 2 standouts for me were Catalina of course and Orlando torbon as the portly "Don Fernando." What's a Don without a lil fatness eh? He could of been ANY number of working class yet connected hombres on Roosevelt Avenue! Although just a cameo he is central to the climax of the story. Sure I felt it could of been longer in time and gone a little heavier, but overall I was happy upon first viewing and have since enjoyed "Maria" 2 other times.
Here is a subject that I happen to be curious about, I thought initially a movie like "Washington Heights" would be about drugs, maybe not the actual swallowing of drugs, but whether you swallow, sell or use it really is all connected. Columbia is still one of the top cocaine and herion producers in the world, and it seems that Columbia, sadly, will always produce the most mules and continue to see its share of drug casualties.
