This film fascinates me. The character development is exquisite. I loved that a story was being filmed as opposed to focussing on movie stars. The film is so well crafted you forget who the actors are and feel as if you're looking through a keyhole seeing real events unfold. I agree with you about the humour which is wicked on so many levels.
What I don't understand is why you'd say the Tenenbaums are making every effort to break apart as a family. They're not. Royal, the three "children"--and Eli Cash still across the street apparently--all desperately want to turn back the clock 18 years and go "home" in the most infantile way. They revolve around Etheline. She, caring and capable is the one (along with the impossibly everlasting family house & inherited funds) from whom the others all draw solace as well as more material comfort. They lean on her shamelessly but much as she cares for them it's clear that she's doing fine without them. They cling to her and she lets them invade her life again. How are they breaking apart?

laugh or cry - great discussion

I just wanted to chime in, if I may, about this funny/not funny discussion. I agree with both Chrik and Ethan that the film is held together by the tension between disfunctionality/sadness and humor.

But I propose that the key in thinking about whether or not this is comedy or tragedy would be this: the Tenenbaum family ultimately loves each other. they've been off course for years, and in this film, we see their last ditch efforts at maintining that distance; whether they know it or not, they're afraid of coming together again. But in true dysfunctional family form, they DO come together again despite every effort to break apart. That's funny stuff. you _have_ to laugh at it. there is no solution other than laughter/love/happiness. tragic is that which cannot be taken back, tragic loss. nothing is lost besides a little hair and sanity in the RT. evrything, however, is gained.

[thank you guys for the thought provoking discussion!]
