I previously commented on this film, however, I did not complete my thoughts which I hope I'm permitted to do now. The symbolism which was most quizzical to me in the film was the senior monk's supernatural/magical powers especially represented by his ability to move the boat about the lake through his will. Although there are many fantastic stories in the Nikayas (discourses of the buddha) none of them should be taken literally. The buddha was like a carnival barker and he created stories just to attract listeners into his tent. Once in the tent, his followers were taught the principles. It is important in buddhism that the metaphor not be mistaken for the principle.
