    Reader comments on El Alamein

    Subject: great movie, great review
    Date: Nov 26, 2004

What a good review. I read it after viewing the film which I bought from an Italian online dvd store. I am professionally interested in Italy in WWII and the end of fascism and was impressed by the authentic quality of the story ... I didn't realize it was based on actual diaries and memoirs.

I'm surprised (well, maybe not) that the Italian right wing and the ex-neo-fascists didn't like it. It may be an anti-fascist film, but in an understated and not ideological fashion. It is not even a strong antiwar film. The message the viewer takes from it is not something the film imposes, but rather suggests. Above all, it is a film about men at war, and that is something else than an ideological statement. As such it shines.

I suppose even the episode of the general who buries his own aide and then shoots himself is true. That episode is a statement about camaraderie and affection across ranks and about the hopelessness of defeat.
