    Reader comments on Girlhood

Subject: Re: Shanae and Megan's future
    Date: Nov 25, 2004
    Sender: NettePrevious | Next

I agree somewhat with what you say about the two girls. Shanae is luckiest because, despite the loss of her mother, she has always had a solid family support system. I think things went wrong for her with the lack of supervision that led to her drinking and experimenting with sex WAY too early, with the sexual assault that happened to her, and getting involved with older men, who could take emotional advantage of her...

On the other hand, I view her as the less strong of the two girls. Megan's behavior might seem rough, but what she has had to say shows a hard-won maturity beyond her years. She did everything she could to keep her mother and father in her heart, and finally gave up on them. No wonder she is bitter. No wonder she is not able to accept help easily from others. Being let down constantly has led her to believe that you can only count on yourself. So, she made the choice to cut her losses and try to get on without her parents, while seeming to realize that she doesn't deserve what they had been dishing out to her. "Maybe I'm growing up," she says. It's really a shame - in another world, a girl with Megan's beauty and charisma might become an entertainer, or a leader.

I'm glad this film is out there; there are so many people who see troubled youth as a problem in and of themselves, rather than an issue that has a definitive origin outside the child. This can be used as a teaching tool on so many levels - with social workers, teachers, and teens.

    Response to this comment:
    Shanae and Megan's future

Watching "Girlhood" I could not help but ponder the future of the two young ladies. Shanae, despite her emotional baggage, has the support system to help her become a productive member of society; whereas, Megan is still at risk. I felt compelled to watch this film over and over again and again. "Girlhood" is a very powerful documentary. I will continue to pray for Shanae, Megan and their respective families.
