    Reader comments on Fahrenheit 9/11

    Subject: The 'Foundations' of 'Truth'
    Date: Nov 24, 2004
    Sender: adamPrevious | Next

Mooreās film opens up a can of worms that extends beyond the simple question of Bush IIās approach to foreign policy in the wake of Sept 11.

As the armies of the Īrightā and the Īleftā stand either side of the plain, readily sharpening their accusations and preparing retaliatory retorts, those in the middle ö the Ībottle o bluesā of the world ö whom serve as prisms through which each sideās transmitted messages must pass - in order to swell their rank and amplify their convictions ö stand, disorientated, in a hall of mirrors on which the various surfaces shirks to them that it is indeed the direct which they are asked to motion toward is the correct Īone trueā version and interpretation.

For each ĪMooreā, ĪChomskyā, ĪThe Greensā (in Australia, we have 2 traditional parties akin to your American Rep/Dem : Labor/Liberal. The latter are, ironically, ultra conservation and dance to the same social/economic agenda of the Republican party. However, we also have ĪThe Greensā who are progression, grass roots and are diametrically oppose in political posture, to Australiaās greatest global export, R. Murdoch and who now represent the third major party), there will be Fox network, anti-Moore book, film etc, etc.

The standard method of negotiating through this maze of signals is to make judgements on what each political group explicitly communicates and go from there in our own interpretation.

How then to act then in world of information constructed from arbitrary data selections?

Well, Iām not going to pretend that I ö on a web site reviewing the film by Moore and in comment of comments - can disperse the fog of the media and reveal unto all the hidden Ītruthsā of Bush II or Moore.

All I have to offer are further comments - which differ in that they seek to find contact NOT with WHAT we know, but rather HOW we know certain things - which may advance aleast a place from which to view each side's position.

1>ć·Whenever a journalist or policeman appears to be talking to us directly, in our homes, and looking us straight in our eye, he or she is actually reading, from a screen, at the dictation of a Īprompterā, and reading a text which was produced elsewhere, on a different occasion, possibly by other people, or by a whole network of nameless writers and editors.ä [Jacques Derrida (1993): Deconstruction and Actualityä]

2>ćIf we do not have practical information about the war (and none among us has), at least let us have a sceptical intelligence towards it, without renouncing the pathetic feeling of it absurdity.ä [Jean Baudrillard (1991): ćThe Gulf War: Is it Really Taking Placeä?]

    Goodluck...
