The reason I am writing this paper on the movie Mulholland Dr. is because I was so enthralled by it, I want to give you my interpretation of the film.
I want you to cut this movie into four simple parts. 1) The party Diane/Betty goes to with Rita/Camille 2) When Diane/Betty hires the hit man in ãWinkiesä 3) Diane/Betty wakes up and her ex girlfriend is knocking on the door and picks up her things. 4) Diane/Betty suicide. Every part I just mentioned is reality·. Everything else you had seen before is Bettyâs/Dianeâs dream.
The movie starts out to a first person view of a head coming down to a pillow·this is Diane/Betty falling asleep after she has gone to the party with Rita/Camille and hired the hit man to kill Rita/Camille. The hit man mentions to Diane/Betty that when Rita/Camille is dead she will find a blue key in her house signifying that the job has been done.
You know in our dreams that we dream about the people and objects we had come across that same day. Well in Dianeâs/Bettyâs dream everybody she saw at the party that one night and throughout her day is in her dream. For example, Coco is the directors mother when Diane/Betty meets her·. In her dream she turns her into the nice landlord. Also the Cowboy is there and one of those mob bosses. Where did she get the name ãBettyä· on the waitress nametag at ãWinkiesä.
When Diane/Betty falls asleep she turns everything into her fantasy. She sees everything the way she wants things to go. First off she dreams that she is a new actress in Hollywood and has a fresh start. Instead of having her Aunt be dead and having to live in a scroungy apartment she dreams that her aunt is alive and letting her stay at her nice classy apartment. Next in her fantasy· we see Ritaâs/Camilleâs hit go wrong and her coming out of it not knowing any of her past and showing up in Dianeâs/Bettyâs apartment·. A fresh start. We see Diane/Betty and Rita/Camille become lovers and Diane/Betty becoming a star. Also if you notice the scene where Diane/Betty goes to that movie set and seeâs the director and they look at each other (who in reality is Ritaâs/Camilleâs fiancŽ) and it is love at first sight. Dianeâs/Bettyâs Fantasy!
After this whole dream we see Diane/Betty wake up to the knocking of her door. We see as she is walking to the door that the blue key (Ritaâs/Camilleâs Death) is sitting on the coffee table. When Diane/Betty opens her door it is her ex girlfriend coming to pick her stuff up ( Notice the ashtray) The ex leaves and Diane/Betty starts to brew some coffee. This next scene we see Rita/Camille laying naked on the couch and Diane/Betty jumps on her and they start kissing(Notice· There is the same ash tray that her ex picked up sitting there) This is her fantasy (Day Dream) ! We see Diane/Betty back at the coffee machine and pouring herself a cup of coffee. She goes to the coach and sits down and sees the blue key sitting there. She canât take it! The old people signify her conscience. Her conscience wouldnât leave her alone so she committed suicide. This is the story of Mulholland Dr.
Metaphors
Guy behind Winkies = Death
The blue key = Opened up her conscience
The old people = Conscience
Guy at Winkies ( Scared) = Diane/ Betty
The Blue box = ? (I am still trying to figure this one out)
The Opera House = ?
Woman w/ blue hair at Opera house = ?
There are many things I didnât metion in this paper· If you would like to discuss them with me or share some of your thoughts please email me JCTDFrance@aol.com.
