Subject: A tragic hero for the common good

Yes, I agree that popular films generally buy into the collective propaganda of day. Just rent the 1943 German production of Baron Mnchhausen or watch BraveHeart.
The same is true for Hero. It should be no surprise that a Chinese co-produced film features a Hero who is made heroic for sacrificing himself for the common good. Many cultures value such ideals as good and those that protect them as Heroic.
Just because ÎHeroâ is consistent with official Chinese values does not mean that the script came straight from Beijing or is Îevilâ as the reviewer suggests. After all, does the American president have to tell Hollywood producers to make another big budget blockbuster featuring a rugged individualistic hero making another speech for individual liberties and apple pie before the big battle? Of course not! Hollywood producers just make those movies because thatâs what Americans expect and thatâs what makes them popular.
Hero is a great moive. Watch it and enjoy it for itâs cinematic values and also think about its place in the popular myths of the country it comes from.
It would be interesting to compare ÎHeroâ to the upcoming Hollywood release of ÎAlexanderâ.
Iâm willing to bet ÎAlexanderâ has a lot less to do with life and politics as it was in ancient Greece than it does with life and politics in America and the myths of individualism and liberty that Americans treasure most. I canât wait to see it.
I do like big budget movies with epic and heroic fight scenes - - - that is what I enjoy most!
The critiquing is just fun to do afterwards.
