What is the deal with this website? Is this an organized gathering of self-indulgent "artists" who want to believe a low-budget and labored character analysis is the essence of a good film. This site is so inherently anti-studio it's ridiculous. Film should serve two purposes seeing as how I dedicate both my time and money to seeing them. Above all else, it had better be entertaining. Talking is fine, but for God's sake, give me something to quote or remember or at least smile about. Too many independent writers write and write until they finally feel the character has been captured. A truly gifted directing/writing combination can capture the very essence of a character with minimal dialog, demonstrative action, and subtle uses of props and setting. The important thing is to move the story along, give those characters something to do. If I want to meet interesting people who are struggling with very personal problems, why I've got friends, family, and a classroom of students who provide that every day. If I want to escape my reality and see very real characters challenged by unique situations, then I turn to film. The second thing film should do is reinforce some value or vision held by the filmmakers and allow the audience to assess that message.
