Subject: You hit the nail on the head
Date: Sep 10, 2004
I just watched "Hero". Though beautiful, it expounds a message most disturbing. Eloguence does not necessarily equate to substance. The message itself is actually confusing and contradictionary. Though the King is a tyrant, he is moved by one man, an assassin. This is as improbable as those "reality" shows.
If you inspect the film carefully, you see the word "Mao" splattered everywhere. This might have well have been a propaganda film for opressive China.
Though it is chivalrous to die for a greater cause. You need to inspect what that cause is. Think Bush and the Irag war. The "Hero" (and assasin) changes his mind on the flimsiest of logic. Would you not kill a system which has killed many? Does retaining a dictator (hence unifying a country) really mean less will die? Think Hitler.
The film-maker tries to weasel in a larger contextual idealism. Killing (or suicide) for any reason is wrong. Hence, heroism comes not in the form of violent death, but in a cathartic realism that one must stop killing to gain any idealism at all.
The flaw is that the King kills. He kills his enemies, he kills the assassin (apparently the only who understands him, no less).
Hence, the film-maker has unfortunately thrown his idealism out the window - and the film is nothing more than a pretty propaganda film.
