Subject: I just saw the movie

after reading your review without spoilers. Then I went back and reread it. And I basically agree, in the sense that I profoundly disagree with (and am disturbed by) the ideology of the movie. But I think it's too easy for us Westerners to just dismiss this ideology. I think it is, at root, evil, but it's a complex and in many ways appealing evil. It's basically the question that all good fantasies wrestle with. Do you use the Ring to bring peace and order, when nothing else will do? The fourth season of "Angel," in which the superbeing "Jasmine" brings a reign of peace and prosperity to earth, and the heroes defeater with great difficulty, only to be rewarded by the demonic firm Wolfram and Hart, addresses the same issues. It isn't an easy question, and we owe this movie a great debt for putting the collectivist case so powerfully and beautifully. I long to use this movie in a class at some point--perhaps alongside St. Augustine's _City of God_, which has a rather different take on questions of order and peace and justice.
