True, Zhang Yimou has had his movies banned in China and at one time was not able to work for a few years as a result of the content of his work. However, that does not erase the fact that the theme of Hero is one supported and promoted by the Chinese Government. Even Jet Li admitted this in Kung Fu magazine several years ago before the movie opened in China. "Tian Xia," which is mis-translated as "our land" in the American subtitled release, really refers to to the world (literally, heaven and below). This is a common theme of the Party in Beijing. Tian Xia women shi yige guo, Under heaven we are one country (are you listening Taiwan?). All this being said, that doesn't mean Hero isn't a good film. It is. It's weakness, if there is one, is in it's thin dialogue not it's politcal message. That's an ideological difference, not a reason to discount it's merits. Put it this way, we all think that the Tianamen Square massacre was horrible. I agree, but hypothetically, if there existed a fundamentalist group that potentially had the influence to march on Washington and convert our government from a democratic republic to say, a fundamentalist muslim regime(since they have replaced the Communists as our number one fall guy), there would be a lot of people who would back (and currently do back) armed retaliation.

Re: Talk about over-analyzing!
Less attention was made toward the quality of the movie than to your own political stance. It seems as if you are trying to ascribe a viewpoint that isn't really there to go on about your own political beliefs.
If you are wondering about the political motives, if any, of the director of the movie, then you would be totally off. He's been known to make controversal movies which counter the views held by the mainland Chinese government. Take To Live as an example, tracing the lives of a family living from the conception of communism to the Cultural Revolution and beyond. The light in which life was depicted during those years would certainly not be pro-government. In fact, some of his movies were not even permitted to play in Chinese theaters for a good while. Zhang Yimou is the last director in my mind which would have a pro-Communist party stance.
When reviewing movies, talk more about the movie itself than your own political beliefs. It's called a movie review for a reason.
