By "everyone else" did you mean only to include those who shared their thoughts at rottentomatoes.com? If so, I cannot comment, as I have not followed the commentary there, but if you truly meant "everyone else", then - as I suspect you know by now - "everyone else" does not think the film is good. And even among those who do think it's good, there are many who have faulted the seeming pro-totalitarian politics.
In fact, in the year prior to it's U.S. release, nearly every review I read mentioned some level of disappointment with what they saw as the political message of the film. And even the entirely positive reviews recognized and addressed the issue. Of course, we are talking of the international press here, who reviewed the film NOT as the latest Jet Li martial arts flick, but as the latest "art film" by director Zhang Yimou, who's films have always been viewed within a political context.
Of course, the U.S. press has not been silent on the issue either. Among many others, both the New York Times and the Village Voice recently mentioned the politics in their reviews, the later making comparisons to TRIUMPH OF THE WILL, just as Mr. Tanzer did.
All this said, I do still think the film is good. In fact, as one of the directors of the New York Asian Film Festival (nyaff.org), I thought that - despite the bitter taste of the politics - the film was good enough to be awarded it's New York premiere at the festival this past June. And thankfully, our audience loved it, voting it 2nd only to PLEASE TEACH ME ENGLISH as the best film of the festival.

Why are you one of the FEW that does not like this movie? Look at Rottentomatoes.com and look at the rating for this movie? There were near 40+ good reviews for this movie and there were 2 negative, you and some other "critic". Man, I read a lot of your reviews and they are way off base, no wonder you write for a lame website, your views suck...
