I was glad to find this discussion because the content of this movie had an impact on me! I was psyched to love it (I'm a fan of everyone involved), and shocked when I saw it. Some points of argument:
1) To those who resent the comparison to "Birth of a Nation" and "Triumph of Will" because "this is a good movie, as a movie": HELLO! The reason those movies are remembered with controversy is because they were spectacular as works of art while being horrifying in content, and propaganda for systems that most people now repudiate. Whatever you think of the quality or content of "Hero," its quality doesn't negate the validity of discussing it's content.
2) "the needs of the many outweighs the needs of the few" can be interpeted in 2 almost opposite ways. One implies heroic sacrifice to save others (something most people can respect), the other implies that it is acceptable to violently suppress innocent people in order to achieve order for the larger state--which happens to be your side (something that will get a lot of argument from me, and yes is related to facism. Just because facism was a western movement doesn't mean it can't happen in another guise in Asia...look at Communism).
3) I agree with both interpretations: yes, it was moving in its idea that there are bigger things than revenge, and that intense study and introspection can lead to a peaceful perspective. BUT, the idea that small countries should just lay back and submit to being taken over by more powerful countries and it's for their own good, shocked and horrified me. And I don't think it's a matter for only China. I can see many western conquerers saying this to their conquered and colonies.
I wish the content of this movie was discussed in MORE reviews.
