I just saw "The Royal Tenenbaums" and I agree 100% with FV's assessment that the movie makes you want to laugh at every scene even when maybe the situation isn't laughable. Throughout the movie I had that very urge - in part I thought because, while I found the actors/characters believeable, I also got the sense that lurking just behind each of their own visages was the temptation to crack a grin.

I was also very impressed with the way Anderson, a Texan, captured what New Yorkers are really like - at least to my eye. I've only been to NYC a few times, but each time, I've been struck by how UNLIKE their movie/TV counterparts they are. I've yet to see a New Yorker that dressed like Rachel or Monica or lived in a town house like Meg Ryan's in "You've Got Mail." Rich or poor, many seem to live in somewhat dingy, worn abodes, with faded, threadbare carpeting, out-of-style wall fixtures, and painted walls that look dirty. Perhaps that is because most of the city is not on 5th Avenue in Manhatten, which is to say that most of the city is a bit dingy and thread-bare and I think Anderson captured that beautifully. I always had the sense that if you could SMELL the rooms the Tenenbaums were inhabiting, they would be rather musty.
