Subject: Nobody's brought this up yet......

I'm so far behind the curve, I just saw Mulholland Drive. I was ready to turn it off when the club Silencio scene started. Something that everyone seems to have missed (probably because it's obscure as hell, ha ha ha) is the introduction of the singer.
The MC calls her "our very own La Lorona, Rebecca del Rio."
In Spanish, La Lorona is the crying woman, del Rio is "From the river." "La Lorona" is a type of ghost in Central American folklore, who is crying because she has killed her children or sometimes her family or sometimes her lover and then commited suicide. Usually by drowning herself in a river.
So it seems to me that either Rita really died in the hit/accident and descended into some sort of purgatory to accept her death ( I thought the dead woman in the apartment was Rita when I saw that scene), or Betty has indeed killed her loved one, then herself, and is in some sort of Purgatory herself, trying to make sense of everything. Knowing now that the original incarnation of this film ended with the opening of the blue box, I'm inclined to think it was originally supposed to be the former.
I'm sure a lot of people will disagree if this post ever gets read, but in the end, really the film is about anything and everything you think it's about, intentional or not. That's what makes art, art.
And as far as the seemingly unanimous faith in Lynch's "uncompromisingness" as a film-maker, we are talking about a guy who shot a pilot for a TV show and then just tacked on an ending (all of which is after what is the most natural feeling ending, IMHO) after it didn't get picked up in an effort to create a stand-alone film so that he could get it to some sort of market.
So maybe each part isn't going to be indispensable to the whole, and if you want to interpret it a certain way to get a certain thing out of it, ignore a detail or two if you need to.
