    Reader comments on The Company

What an elegant film that is so subtle in its construction and storyline it is itself, a ballet. Robert Altman has created a superior
view of the complex world of ballet, it's personalities, and drama, in such a way one forgets The Company is not a documentary, but fictional drama, featuring real dancers, a real company (the Joffery), and lordy, real choreographers. With the exception of actors, Malcom McDowell as Mr. A, Neve Campbell as Ry, her boyfriend, James Franc, Ry's family, most everyone else in the film are professional dancers. What an unique idea! Altman permits the camera to watch but not interfere with the spectacle of dance in progress to final performances which thankfully, are not edited but intimate. He follows the bodies in motion, space, and time and it is a gift to see the beauty of these artists whose momentary careers are fraught with so many dangers. The main character Ry's story is only secondary to the concept of many stories the comprise a company, and while she is at the center of the film's attention, she is only one small element. Performers, dancers and actors share the screen without hogging or drawing unnecessary attention to their performances, and it is Altman's choreography as director that shines by not allowing any one storyline to overshadow or upstage the dancing. What a joy to watch as performance and performers construct a filmic dance a deaux.
