    Reader comments on Before Sunset

    Subject: "After Sunrise"

I was excited to see a sequel to a movie that I really liked in 1995 and have watched several times over the years. And I admit, I loved most of the second film... great dialogue, great to see the characters/actors again, great to see Paris this time! But I wish we all had left (including Jesse) right after Celine finished her song. What (presumably) happened after that was sad proof to me that not only had the characters not changed much, they also had not matured. If you prefer to stay in your world of illusions, it can easily break you and others. Don't tell me: "It's just a movie..." Movies carry messages, and this one was a big disappointment to me. That's where "Before Sunset" loses it...and in that sense really did not need to be made.

Let's just assume we are all adults and envision the third film: "After Sunrise". Basic outline: Jesse calls his wife in New York and finds some pathetic excuse why he missed his plane (if he actually did) which will only be the first lie. His wife smells a rat, she has finally had it, and she hands in the divorce papers, making sure Jesse loses custody of his son whom he loves more than anything and which will break his heart. Celine will throw him out of her Paris apartment after a week since she can't live with any man close to her (she told him so). And after realizing that she has ruthlessly and selfishly ruined his life, it's gonna get ugly. He will vehemently resent her and want her out of his life for good. Chaos and heartbreak - who needs it? Plus: the regrets he would then have about leaving that train with Celine in Vienna nine years ago, will even taint "Before Sunrise", an otherwise wonderful movie experience for all of us.
