    Reader comments on Twentynine Palms

Yeah, I've got to say that I loved 29 Palms. I had a chance recently to screen the film in NY while I was there checking out the Tribeca Film Festival. It was my second time and I loved it just as much.

In a nutshell, all I need to say to justify this work of art for myself is that like all great works of art, this film rubs against the grain, and challenges the reader. Good art can get under your skin and challenge your perspective on things. And I think this film does exactly that.
It is excessive and a little over the top, but that may change with time.

The film is exceptionally calculated and Dumont is aware of his degree of manipulation of the viewer. Like a great many films out of France recently (Irreversible, Trouble Every Day,etc) this film doesn't pretend to give you pleasure from its narrative or character development. Those are not aims of these filmmakers. They'd rather create a mood or vibe (not always pleasurable) akin to some of our contemporary existential woes and dilemmas. And I think Dumont is right on with 29 Palms. Great filmmaking, and undeniably effective...even if you hated it. Not for the faint at heart, but very sensitive in a strange way.

Just to follow up on your reply (because I found this film to be a lot better and more interesting than I usually do this kind of film): you are focusing too much on it being about America („and its obsession with huge SUVs and outsized egos.š) There are certainly no outsized egos here. The movie is, as I said, mostly about power, in general, and I would even say, vulnerability in an indifferent Universe. That‚s why the desert works so well. Besides the Hummer, there is precious little Americana in the visuals. As for the character development you keep saying was missing, film is more like a short story, not a novel. The characters are essentially established from the beginning. You learn things about them and the characters might, in fact, learn something about themselves or about life at the end of the story, but it‚s the story that goes through an arc, not the character. Besides, I thought Dumont told us plenty about both of the characters. A key scene, by the way, was when they were sitting in front of the ice cream stand and she tells him that she likes the soldier (whose back is to them) because he is handsome. This bothers him; here, he begins to register his contempt for her. He starts to regret bringing her. (That is why, in the end, after he is raped and she is not, he cuts all of his hair off before he ambushes her. It is a reference to the soldier.) As for being boring for the first 90 minutes, on the surface, it was. But that is really a matter of taste, not the success or failure of the film. Sometimes, you just have to accept that you chose to take two hours out of your day to see a film and let the filmmaker make the film the way he or she wants to and judge it for its entirety. By the way, did you see and review „North Fork.š That movie, I thought was irredeemably bad. If you saw it and liked it, I wouldn‚t mind hearing from you why. Best regards, BT
