    Reader comments on Pistol Opera

    Subject: Pistol Opera

I have to say that I think most of the comments made about Pistol Opera in Joshua Tanzer's review are just wrong. First, this film appeals to a mass audience specifically BECAUSE of the artistic/formal/aesthetic things going on in it - it grabs the same audience that loves to watch Michael Bay blow things up. In fact, the guys sitting next to me at the screening where I saw Pistol Opera were stoned. So the demographic is not simply film-kids: that's an oversimplification.
Secondly, saying that there's nothing interesting about Black Cat is like saying that there's nothing interesting about The Man With No Name in the Clint Eastwood/Sergio Leone spaghetti western trilogy. She's stoic, but she's sure as hell complex. She's one of those great enigmatic figures with a history of killing that you find in films like A Fist Full of Dollars, Ride the High Country, and Kill Bill. It's a western thing, not something specific only to this film.
I also feel like it's a strange move to write the characters off - specifically, it's weird that the review mentions both Black Cat and the older woman as examples of "who cares?" moments. I have a feeling that it has something to do with the fact that they're women, and it seems to show a discomfort with women at the center of an action film. But you know what? Black Cat is an amazing killer figure in the tradition of many film figures before her - if you can't notice that and then be interested in the fact that she's a woman, too, then you're missing a lot of the point of this film.
Those are my two cents. Best of luck.
