Butterfly is a great movie about life in Pre-Franco Spain. It is interesting the way it depicts Spain's growing tensions between republicans and nationalists through the different types of persons in the Galician town.
Also the movie has many biblical allusions. For example a poem, read by a student in the begining of the movie, mentions Abel and Cain. This works well with the overall theme of Spain Civil war, which in a way was a war among brothers. Also the scene where the teacher gives moncho an apple is great scene which alludes to the snake in the garden that gave Adam the apple of knowledge. Overall, it is a good movie.

"Butterfly" gives you sense of joy, curiosity, and sadness. The movie shows MonchoÔs innocent, joy and curiosity. At the beginning of the movie the director wanted to show how Spain was like under the Republican rule through Moncho. Moncho is a smart and curious boy who wanted to know everything and with Don Gregorio guiding Moncho. Moncho was able to learn and have fun. Moncho and Don Gregorio built a student-teacher relationship. But that relationship was shattered when the nationalist took over Spain. Moncho was forced call his mentor/friend traitor, communist and anarchist.
